What is the green NIE?
It's the EU registration certificate (form EX-18): the document showing you live in Spain if you're from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. You apply in person in your province, and it carries your NIE, so you don't need the white one first.
Royal Decree 240/2007, article 7
- For EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
- Compulsory if you stay more than 3 months
- Carries your NIE
Is it for you?
Also known as the EU registration certificate. Check whether it's for you.
You need it if
- You're a citizen of the EU, the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or Switzerland.
- You're going to live in Spain for more than three months. You have three months from arrival to apply.
- You live in any province: the appointment is booked in yours.
It's not for you if
- You're not from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland: you need a TIE, which we don't handle.
- You're the family member of an EU citizen without EU nationality yourself: that's a different card (EX-19).
- You only need the number to buy, inherit or sign something without moving here. That's what the white NIE is for.
The EU registration certificate, whatever your situation
In the form you pick your situation, and knowing what the office asks for in your case is our job.
